June 2: DAY OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC

ll 2 June 1946, the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage, Italians called to the polls to express their views on what form of government, monarchy or republic, give the country following the fall of fascism. After 85 years of his reign, with 12,717,923 votes against 10,719,284 Italy became a Republic, while the Savoy family fled the country.

It erased the dictatorship, women won the right to vote and 566 of the Constituent Assembly were preparing, in less than two years to write the Constitution.
